In a nutshell, Health Related Fitness is a type of fitness training that is aimed exclusively towards health promotion and the prevention of disease. It includes the ability to perform daily exercises or physical activities which will contribute to your overallhealth and well-being.

What makes it so different?

When someone is proficient at a specific sport physically, it is often associated with good health and well-being. However, being good at a particular sport alone does not necessarily dictate great health. Sports such as baseball, football, golf and others mainly focus on skills, and thus are termed “Skill or Sport Related Fitness”. They have little to do with health promotion or disease prevention.

Do I Need To Work Out Very Hard To Achieve Optimum Health Through Fitness?

Not necessarily. It all depends on how one defines “Hard” and what the fitness goals are. For example, aerobics , swimming or simply running are considered to be great cardiovascular exercises. However, you don’t need to run like a marathon runner, swim like a triathlete or almost collapse due to exhaustion in order to achieve maximum health benefits through exercising. Research has shown that health benefits are much better when performing exercises moderately then when exercising at very strenuous levels. The body responds better to gradual rhythmic changes rather than sudden abrupt ones. This of course does not mean one shouldn’t test the limits of their physical abilities or strength. That is solely an individual choice. Simply bear in mind that such extremes are unnecessary for obtaining optimum health through fitness.

Will The Principles of Health Related Fitness Help Me Lose Weight, Look and Feel Great?

Naturally Yes but that is not what being fit and healthy is all about. Once again, one can look and feel great but yet be unhealthy for various other reasons. Many bodybuilders and other athletes look and feel great but yet develop heart disease or some other illness in the latter stages of their lives. The goal of physical fitness shouldn’t be mainly aesthetics. It makes no sense to spend countless hours at the gym and yet succumb to some form of preventable illness or injury.
